As soon as you deliver your bundle of joy, the paediatrician will note the essential growth parameters of your baby. These growth parameters include the height in centimetres, the weight in kilograms, and the head circumference in centimetres. All these parameters will be measured regularly for an entire year or two.

The growth parameters recorded ensure a healthy growth pattern in the child and rule out any developmental disparities. The growth patterns in baby girls and boys are different, and not to forget, every child grows at their own pace. Hence, the differential growth parameters have standardised upper and lower limits as defined by the World Health Organisation (W.H.O).

During your regular visits, your paediatrician will measure the below given growth parameters (as shown in the accompanying pictures) every month from 0 to 12 months of age.

  1. Height – The baby is made to lie on her back and measured from head to feet in centimetres.
  2. Weight – The baby is made to lie on a digital weighing scale to measure the weight in kilograms.

Factors affecting the baby’s growth parameters:

Various parameters may affect or slow down the growth of your baby girl at certain times. When your baby is getting her tooth, she may lose appetite for a while. If your baby is sick, she may show disinterest in eating and play activities. These factors can reasonably influence the growth of the baby for some time. A few of the other factors influencing the growth of baby girl include:

Genetic predisposition

Genes play a significant role in deciding the height and weight of your kids. Parents have a fair chance of passing on the genes determining height and weight to the kids.

Baby’s Nutrition

Babies in the age group of 0-12 months depend on breast milk or formula for adequate nutrition and calories. The number of feeds, duration of feeding, and the mother’s nutritional status can influence the growing baby.

Health during pregnancy

The baby acquires its initial nourishment during pregnancy, and a healthy pregnancy is a primary aspect for a healthy baby.

Illness or ailment (if any)

If the baby is frequently affected by ailments such as common cold, fever, cough, teething, or ear infection, the baby may get fussy and feed less than required. However, once the baby recovers, these growth hurdles usually go away and the baby grows normally.

When should you see a doctor?

For a particular age, the healthy growth values of the child can be anywhere between the given standard range. It need not necessarily be towards the higher end only. But, if you notice a consistent dip in height, weight, or the head circumference values over a period of time, and the child has no ailment or genetic factors that you know of, you will need to check with your paediatrician to address the underlying reasons for a delay in the baby’s growth.

Conclusion

The baby girl weight in kg, baby girl height in cms, and head circumference in cms is taken immediately after birth and continued to be taken every month for 12 months to ensure proper growth and development of your child. The noted parameters are compared with the standard parameters given by the World Health Organisation (WHO). These standard growth values are different in boys and girls, as their growth patterns vary and the boys may usually be heavier and taller than their girl counterparts.

Factors such as illness may influence the growth of your baby girl, and you will need to analyse the growth parameters carefully. If you find any decline in the growth values or if your child has a delay in growth, discuss with your doctor about growth enhancers, appetite builders, or nutritional supplements for the optimal growth of your baby.
