Considering every aspect and need of a pregnant woman and a lactating mother, the Government of India has initiated a maternity benefit program in accordance with the provision of the National Food Security Act, 2013. 

PMMVY, Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana initiated in 2017 is a Central Government sponsored Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme, aiming to benefit Pregnant Women (PW) and Lactating Mothers (LM).

What is PMMVY Scheme?

Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana is a central government scheme provides partial wage compensation through cash incentives enabling women to rest before and after delivery of the first living child. The cash incentives can help improve pregnant women and lactating mothers’ health (PW& LM).

Who Can Benefit from PMMVY?

Under PMMVY, a cash incentive of Rs. 5000/- in three instalments [(i)- 1000, (ii)-2000, (iii)- 2000] is directly credited in the account of Pregnant Women(PW) and Lactating Mothers (LM) above 19 years for the first living child of the family subject to their fulfilling specific conditions relating to Maternal and Child Health.

After institutional delivery, the eligible beneficiaries would receive the remaining cash incentives as per approved norms towards maternity benefit under Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY). On average, a woman will get Rs. 6000/-

What is the Pregnancy Amount from the Government in 2022? 

The registered beneficiaries under the PMMVY scheme will receive a cash incentive of Rs. 5,000 in three installments at different stages of pregnancy and motherhood when the given criteria and conditions are fulfilled. In case of institutional delivery, the beneficiary can receive a total average incentive of Rs. 6,000 (under JSY scheme).   

How to Register for PMMVY Scheme Online?

PMMVY is an installment-based cash initiative where all pregnancy women and lactating mothers who have their pregnancies on or after 01.01.2017 are eligible for three installments. For PMMVY benefits, the beneficiary must register her pregnancy at an approved health facility within 150 days from the date of LMP, which must be entered into the MCP Card. 

Thereafter, she can apply for availing maternity benefits at Anganwadi Centre (AWC) or to ASHA /Auxiliary Nurse Midwife(ANM) within 730 days from the date of LMP.

However, to simplify, 

  1. The eligibility for the first installment of Rs 1000/ -, an early registration of her (beneficiary) pregnancy at the Anganwadi Centre (AWC) / approved Health facility. And  Download PMMVY Form 1 A
  2. The eligibility for the second installment of Rs 2000/ – is only after six months of pregnancy on receiving at least one ante-natal check-up (ANC). And Download PMMVY Form 1 B
  3. The third installment of Rs 2000/ – eligibility is after childbirth is registered and the child has received the first cycle of vaccinations of BCG, OPV, DPT, and Hepatitis – B, or its equivalent/ substitute.

What in Case of Non-registration for a Pregnancy Amount from the Government in 2021?

If the beneficiary has not registered for the benefit within 180 days of the last LMP, she can apply at any point of time but earlier than 730 days of pregnancy. This condition holds good even if she has not claimed any installments but fulfills eligibility criteria and conditions for receiving the benefits. In cases where the LMP date is not recorded in the MCP card, and the beneficiary is to claim the third installment under the scheme, the registration forms in such cases must be submitted within 460 days from the date of childbirth beyond which no claim shall be entertained.

PMMVY Conditions

All Pregnant Women and Lactating Mothers, except for PW&LM who are in permanent employment roles with Central Government, the State Governments, or Public Sector Units. 

Those availing of any other similar scheme or benefits will not be eligible.

The beneficiary (one availing PMMVY benefit) would need to have a mother and child protection card (MCP Card) where the date and stage of pregnancy according to the last menstrual period (LMP) is recorded.

The MCP Card is a maternal and child care entitlement card, a counseling and family empowerment tool that would ensure tracking of mother and child partnering health, nutrition, and development assistance. 

The beneficiary will need to furnish aadhar card of herself and spouse. She will also be required to open a bank account (if not opened). No joint accounts will be accepted. 

In case of Miscarriage/Still Birth:

A beneficiary is eligible to receive benefits only once under this scheme.

The beneficiary is eligible to claim the unclaimed (remaining) installment (s) in the event of any future pregnancy.

For instance, if the beneficiary has had a miscarriage after receiving the 1st installment, she is eligible for receiving the 2nd and 3rd installment in the event of future pregnancy subject to fulfillment of eligibility criteria and conditions of the scheme.

Similarly, if the beneficiary has a miscarriage or stillbirth after receiving 1 st and 2nd installments. In that case, she will be eligible for receiving 3rd installment in the event of future pregnancy subject to fulfillment of eligibility criteria and conditions of the scheme.

In case of Infant Mortality

Since this scheme allows the beneficiary to receive benefits only once, in case of infant mortality, if the expecting mother has already received cash incentives under the maternity benefit of PMMVY, she will not be eligible to claim benefits under the scheme again in the event of future pregnancy.

Pregnant and Lactating Anganwadi Workers (AWWs), Association for Welfare of Handicapped (AWHs), and Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) may also avail the benefits under the PMMVY subject to fulfillment of scheme conditions.
